National Tulip Day 2015 review
“Blue sky everywhere, National Tulip Day is going to be great!” was my first thought with a big smile on early Saturday morning when I opened up the curtains. The day before it was pouring down rain and that is not the ideal kind of weather you are looking forward to walking around and taking photos in.
By 9 am I was on my way to the National Tulip day on Dam Square in Amsterdam. Since I was a bit early my first stop was the flower market in Amsterdam. A lovely place to buy your souvenirs and a not so great place to buy tulip bulbs. At least they tried to sell blue tulip bulbs to me in the beginning of January (Blue tulips only exist by Photoshop and selling bulbs now well it is not the time to sell/plant bulbs anyway) I found some new tulip souvenirs and had a quick cup of tea at the Starbucks at the end of the flower market.
By 10.30 am I was back at Dam Square and the building of the pop up tulip garden was at full swing. Lots of volunteers helped out by creating the garden, hanging banners, informing people. And when the opening time at 1 pm came closer the long line to enter grown longer and longer.
Close to 1 pm there was a opening ceremony with special words and attention for the Red Cross around the international symbool of a red cross of red tulips in a circle of white tulips. Share happiness, give tulips!
At exactly 1 pm, the band was playing the song “tulips from Amsterdam” and the colorful pop up garden was opened for the public. Within minutes the garden was filled with people picking tulips, children running around to look at all the different tulips, lots of laughs en joy! People could pick their own colorful bunch of tulips and put them in the provided red cross bags.
It was a lovely National Tulip Day 2015. Next year it will be the fifth anniversary year of the pop up tulip garden. See you all next year!
