Harvesting the tulip bulbs
Last week I visited Daan and Anja of de Tulperij a flower farm in Voorhout just 2,5 miles (4,4 km) outside Keukenhof Garden. Lots of tourists have visited their tulip fields on excursions last spring.
The tulips are done blooming since mid May and now it is time to harvest the bulbs out of the ground. Have a look!
The fields are cleared of all the green and the bulbs are still in the ground.
A big machine will drive over the land and scoop the sand including the bulbs up.
The machine will than shake the bulbs to get the sand off as much as possible.
The bulbs are collected in big wooden boxes and driven back to the farm for sorting, cleaning and packaging.
Than they are sold all around the world and maybe end up in your garden!

My tulips have finished blooming and the leaves are starting to fade. I have noticed that at the bottom of some of the stems there is a growth like a large lump. Is this a form of new bulb or seed and what should I do with it? Last year after the tulips were done and cut back I simple left them in the ground and this year they came back double fold.
You can leave them in the ground or, when a second bulb is forming on the first bulb, break the second bulbs of and plant this bulb else where in your garden.
