Today (22nd of march) was opening day of the Keukenhof. The pipe organ was playing, first tulips and crocuses in sight and quite a number of tourist present. The weather was very nice this morning. Lots of sunshine, so a great start of the Tulip season this year.
The park looks very nice, still lots of green as it is early in springtime. But I think the visitors travelling this and next week won’t be disappointed. Outside you can find a lot of crocuses, daffodils and early tulips. Inside there is a wonderful tulip show on display (#4) where you can see all the different tulips. Here you can find a lot of photographs trying to capture the nicest tulips.
Dotted around the park there are different shops and restaurants with the terrace outside, a lovely place to relax in the sunshine. See this map of Keukenhof to find the numbers of this post.
This morning I stopped at the little animal farm (#8). Last year it was not possible to enter and pet the animals. This year it is possible so it is a lovely place to stop with children. (The playground is also nearby) As I chatted with the employees I learned that this animal farm is a education project for them to gain working experience (School of animal management in Aalsmeer). They can tell a lot about the animals and you can see they enjoy working here. The animals like the rabbits and the cow are special old Dutch species, no regular animals here 🙂
On opening day there are always some special things going on. One of the inspirational gardens (#9) was build today and they where taping for a Dutch television program. Fun to watch! From the side of the inspirational gardens there is a beautiful view to the windmill (#7), great to take some photo’s of the old bridge, the boat in the water and the windmill.
From this side of the park there are some views to the surrounding flower fields. At this moment you can see one yellow field of daffodils and one purple field with crocuses. People who are planning to walk around outside the keukenhof be aware that they are not in full bloom yet (I would spend some more time in the Keukenhof instead).
At the other end of the park, around the wilhelmia pavilion (#2) the park look extremely nice. The large trees are getting green and especially around #6 the flowers look stunning. If you are visiting in the next 2 weeks make sure you visit this place. (if you walk around the park #6 is a place almost overlooked)
Photo’s of today shoot can be found on Flickr.
What to expect if you travel next week:
Daffodils, crocuses and early tulips can be found in the Keukenhof. There are still lots of greens but a lot of beautiful flowers as well. The weather is extremely nice for the time of the year, between 15-19 degrees C with lots of sunshine. That means we are heading to a warm springtime. The flower fields are looking green, but with these temperatures they are getting their color more quickly.
Hope to see you soon in the Keukenhof!
