First time visitors to Amsterdam places to visit?
Many people don’t travel just to see the flower fields at Keukenhof garden. What are the place to visit when you are a first time visitor to the Netherlands? We compiled at shortlist for Amsterdam places to visit:
Canal Boat Tour
To get an overview of the city start with a canal boat tour. It is the perfect way to relax and recover from a jetlag watching the city. It is a very different view from the water as the view walking, bussing or riding a tram around. There are several boat companies and all do the same tour around the canals. Sometimes the boats are a bit different, with an open deck to sit in the sun or with a private audio guide so you don’t have to listen to 3 or 4 other languages.
The hop on hop off canal boat looks like a fun idea but for me I prefer the normal tour. For transportation to the different attractions you can easily walk or take the tram it is much quicker. And the final option is to rent your own small electric powered boat for a couple of hours. Bring a some food and drinks (no alcohol for the driver!) and explore the city.
Dam Square
The central square for many tourist. The national monument on this square is a memorial to the victims of the second world war. It is a perfect spot to meet up people in the city and have a wonderful view of the Royal Palace and the New Church (both you can visit).
Anne Frank House
Most tourist choose to visit the Anne Frank House too. It is a moving experience, especially when you have read the book and know the story. It is advised to book online via this link. During the summer months there can be a line up to two hours before you can enter. During wintertime it has less waiting time but it is still advised to book your time slot. Slots are release around 90 days in advance.
Museums
Four of the world class museums of Amsterdam has reopened their doors again after a lot of renovations. The Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum and also the Stedelijk and Maritime museum are now open again for the public. For people who love film the new film museum Eye with a wonderful cafe and restaurant has opened in the North op Amsterdam.
Enjoy your time visiting Amsterdam!
