Held for the 13th time on the third Saturday of January, this spectacular event transforms the iconic Museum Square, nestled next to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, into a vibrant sea of color. This year, Dutch tulip growers outdid themselves by contributing a staggering 200,000 tulips to the event. The vibrant blooms formed a captivating mosaic, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a sensory experience that heralded the beauty of the upcoming spring season. Dutch tulip growers, represented by the Tulpen Promotie Nederland (TPN), generously adorned Museum Square with 200,000 tulips, transforming it into a colossal picking garden. An estimated 21,000 visitors from both domestic and international locations attended the event. Around 4:30 PM, visitors plucked the last tulips, concluding the festive day on Museumplein.
Pick Your Pleasure: A Bunch of Tulips for Everyone
The essence of National Tulip Day lies in its inclusivity. Attendees, whether locals or tourists, were invited to pick their very own bunch of tulips – and the best part? It was all for free. The opportunity to hand-select tulips straight from the picking garden added a personal touch to the celebration, allowing each participant to craft a bouquet that reflected their unique taste.
A Star-Studded Baptism: Hardwell and His Tulip
National Tulip Day 2024 was graced by the presence of renowned DJ and music producer Hardwell, adding an extra layer of excitement to the festivities. Before the doors to the picking garden swung open, DJ Hardwell received a unique honor – the baptism of his tulip. This ‘dancing’ tulip, selected personally by the DJ, featured a red bloom with a yellow, fringed edge. The choice was symbolic, mirroring the tulip’s natural movements in the vase, a metaphor for growth and spontaneity.
A Unique Tulip: Hardwell’s Floral Legacy
Named Tulipa ‘Hardwell,’ this botanical marvel stood out with its fringed petals, sturdy stem, and a color palette that mirrored the energy and vibrancy associated with the DJ’s music and performances. Hardwell expressed his honor and hope that the tulip would serve as a reminder of the unifying power of music and the joy it brings. he robust cut tulip has been cultivated by Vertuco from Oude Niedorp, originating from a crossbreeding of Tulipa ‘Pacific Pearl’ and Tulipa ‘Kensington.’ The breeding process commenced in 1985.
