It took a long time but spring is finally here! Today the sun was shining, the temperature went up and a lot of people were having fun outdoors.
At Keukenhof you can notice the difference. The early tulips are small but blooming, the crocuses are up and the first daffodils are in sight. Finally! Keukenhof still looks empty compared to last year but we can finally see some color outdoors.
The weather forecast says that the cold wind from Siberia is turning to a milder direction and the temperature will stay up for the rest of the week. Unfortunately the chance for rain will increase too so please bring a waterproof jacket and umbrella when you are visiting the Keukenhof area.
But with the milder temperature and the rain, the fields will get a nice chance to grow and to start blooming. I expect that at the end of the week that we can see more daffodils fields in bloom. Nature is long behind schedule (about 3 to 4 weeks) so the flowers fields need a lot of sunshine (and some rain as well) to start blooming. Hopefully the color hyacinths fields will follow soon. But I think at this point it will take a week or two before they bloom as well. And what about the tulips? Well they normally follow after the hyacinths. The tulip fields look very small so they need some extra growing time. I keep my fingers crossed for the end of April at this moment.
Will it be worth to visit Keukenhof next week?
Please decide for yourself after seeing all the photos. The same advice as last week: if I had traveled from far I would be still disappointed to see just a couple of flower fields and not to many flowers inside the Keukenhof. But more and more flowers are blooming.
For all people with the question: Will the tulips/flowers bloom at date X ?
I am sorry we still can’t tell. The predictions at this post are an estimate. Due to the extreme cold it is difficult to make a precise forecast this year. The weather is an important factor in this. Just follow the weekly updates and decide for yourself if it is worthwhile to travel to the Keukenhof area.
