Planting bulbs at Keukenhof
Have you planted your bulbs yet? Autumn is the best time for planting your spring flower bulbs. This year 7.000.000 bulbs are planted at Keukenhof Garden in the Netherlands. And they are all planted by hand! It is a huge task for all the gardeners at Keukenhof to get all these bulbs into the ground before winter sets in.
This morning the official plant moment was celebrated at the Keukenhof. The start of the planting season and to hear about season 2016 at the garden.
Golden Age
The theme for Keukenhof 2016 is “The Golden Age”. It is the period in which the Netherlands flourished in the fields of trade, science and art. This is also the period when the world was discovered and the tulip trade flourished. The Keukenhof mosaic for 2016 shows a Delft Blue tile where seaborne trade and Amsterdam canal houses are depicted. The mosaic has a size of 250m2. There are 100.000 bulbs used: tulip, muscari and crocus. And it is planted in double layer (also known as the lasagna technique), visitors can enjoy the mosaic in bloom for a longer time.
The Golden Age is also an inspiration for the many flower shows in the Oranje Nassau Pavilion. New in 2016 is a Golden Age inspirational garden and a Delft Blue garden. We are looking forward to photograph there!
Flower Bulb Market
Tomorrow and this Saturday the Keukenhof will open its doors for the annual Flower Bulb Market. Growers who have specialized in the cultivation of unusual species of bulbous plants, offer their products. In addition, the employees of Keukenhof garden plant demonstrations where they provide interested parties with useful tips and advice. Entree to this market and parking at Keukenhof is free.
Keukenhof 2016 is open from March 24th until the 16th of May 2016.
