Planting bulbs in the flower fields
Have you ever seen the flower fields at spring time? The long endless fields full daffodils, tulips and hyacinths. Every spring time it is a wonderful sight to see all these fields full with colorful flowers. These fields don’t appear out of nowhere. It is hard work for all the bulb farmers to get these fields ready for spring time.
Autumn is not only the time the bulbs are planted in garden around the world. The bulbs in the fields are planted as well. Last weekend I was invited to experience the planting of the bulbs in the fields and to make some photos. Have a look how the bulbs are planted in the fields.
Saturday morning I arrived at the fields of Bloembollenbedrijf P.Pennings and they had already started. The days before planting they made sure the soil was ready for planting and to make straight planting lines in the fields.
A large machine was filled up with bulbs, they were planting daffodils today.
The machine drives over the lines of the fields, put away the soil, drops the bulbs on to the ground and put the soil back over the bulbs again. A fascinating process to watch. In the old days this was all done by hand, a huge task for the bulb farmers in the old days.
A computer regulates the amount of bulbs that are dropped onto the ground.
Have a look to the video that I have made of the planting process:
An other employee makes sure that the machine is never empty and drives big crates full with bulbs to either side of the field so the machine can be filled up with bulbs. And every couple of lines the depth of the bulbs is checked.
And this process continues line after line, field after field until all the flower fields are full with bulbs. After the bulbs are planted in the fields the lines are covered with straw as a protection to the weather. Planting of the fields takes a couple of weeks. It will be finished when the weather turns to freezing temperatures. And than we have to wait to spring time to see the fields in bloom.
