Last week I was interviewed for the Bloemenkrant, the bi-weekly newspaper for the flower industry in the Netherlands. Have a look at the translation here:
Woman in the flower business – Nienke
Nienke scores worldwide with tulips website
The website www.tulipsinholland.com is visited every year by a lot of people from around the world. The related social media like Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter and Google+ have many thousands of active followers and reach more than 1.8 million people every month!
These are numbers the flower business dreams of. The website and associated social media arise from a hobby for tulips photography. Time to meet with the woman behind this success, Nienke from Nieuw Vennep.
Crazy about tulips
In daily life is Nienke active in park management where they make sure that no business park throughout the Randstad region will have the chance to impoverish, at least if it falls under its management. In this area, it concerns just as inventive and successful as her tulips. “I’m crazy about tulips and I just can not get enough to photograph those” explains Nienke. “Every spring I drive every free hour to and along the flower fields to capture the most beautiful moments.
The Flowerparade / Bloemencorso Bollenstreek is photogenic and once the International Flower Exhibition Keukenhof opens its doors, you can say that I camp there. Every day I’m there before dawn to photograph in peace just about every variety of tulips that I encounter. As I shared my favorite photos with friends frequently came the suggestion to do something with it from them. ”
Communicate with tulips
In 2010 Nienke took the plunge and went online with www.tulipsinholland.com. This combined them with popular social media such as Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter and Google+. That this action attracted huge number of visitors in record time, came totally unexpected. “The number of website visitors and followers grow on a daily basis and I have honestly never thought this would be so great. As a language I chose English, so I could easily reach all people all over the world.
The target group is reached Nienke for forty percent from Canada and America. To the public in the Netherlands, Germany, Asia, Australia and New Zealand are the tulips Nienke favorite and of course also in the rest of the world. “In peak periods the number of visitors grows to new heights and that starts in November when vacation plans are made in the spring tulips, the fields, the Keukenhof and the Flowerparade. There are also a lot of questions like where can I rent bikes, where can I see the tulip fields or where I can stay. This kind of practical matters I take you along on the website in a blog or on facebook. During springtime I weekly distribute a newsletter, obviously full of tips where the most beautiful tulip fields in bloom, what is the best period to visit Keukenhof and where tourists can enjoy the Flowerparade Naturally, information about hotels and ideas for days out in the flower fields area. “
Every day Nienke posts a new photo on the social media. All its publications are shared rapidly. During this time she ever get the remark that nonetheless tulips bloom in the spring, but then she always explains that she makes many pictures in the spring that they can fill the whole year round. “Incidentally, I also take pictures of other flowers. So in early November, I visited the FloraHolland Trade Fair in Aalsmeer and in August beautiful pictures of the Dahlia Corso in Zundert. These pictures I post on Flower Friday. On Friday I post also pictures of other flowers because I’ve noticed that tulips enthusiasts also love other flowers. ”
That www.tulipsinholland.com and social media score as well is also not gone unnoticed by the tourist industry and the flower bulb related companies. “I am increasingly approached by parties such as tour operators, hotel chains and other businesses in the tourist industry, the bulb and flower industry and even air carriers or those on my website or social media to advertise. This means that my tulips hobby turns towards a complete company.
